The Shocking Truth About Electric RC Cars and Battery Run Times
Batteries are what make electric rc cars go.Yet what you don’t know about your electric rc cars’ batteries could kill ‘em. Leaving you no choice but to open your wallet and buy more. Ouch!
Still everyone is looking for long running batteries. How long you can run for is called "run time". Doh! And as you’d expect, run time is controlled by a number of factors.
- age of and type of battery pack (older is NOT better)
- size of the vehicle (bigger electric rc cars = more battery drain = less run time)
- road conditions being on road, off road or bashing
You see, NiMhs have higher power storage capacity - which allows you to go faster. And if you let them cool between charges you can run ‘em several times a day.
Pit Tip: By cool I mean at least two hours cool. Sure cells often feel "cool" on the outside after sitting for 30 minutes. But know what? They’re still toasty warm inside. Charging then isn’t conducive to long battery life.Plus NiMhs aren't that fussy about charging or discharging - as long as you have the correct charger that’s designed specifically to charge NiMh packs. As they are charge-heat sensitive. (Bad things can happen if you use the wrong charger.)
Besides they don't have memory problems like NiCad batteries tend to.
Also NiCad (Cad stands for Cadmium) are just plain bad for the environment so are on their way out.
