With Motors for Electric RC Cars It
All Comes Down to Turns and Winds

Not to be confusing but get into electric rc cars and you'll soon discover turns can mean more than one thing.

Yes there are turns on the track.

But when it comes to the motors that power electric rc cars and trucks, well, they're classified by what are called "turns".

So it’s a good idea to get up to speed on this term (no pun intended). Because it comes up over and over again whenever you're discussin electric rc cars motors.

Turns

Turns are sorta <cringe> like horsepower. Just not really.

Actually it is the best way to measure the power of a motor.

To put it simply, the term "turns" literally refers to how many times a wire is wrapped around the armature (the part that spins?) of the motor. Typically turns will run from say 7 to 20 something. With 7 being almost too hot to handle for all but the most skilled drivers of electric rc cars.
• The science behind turns says the lower the number of turns the lower the resistance of the motor.

• Lower resistance means it will draw more current.

• More current drawn in turn means higher RPMs.

• And we all know more RPMS means faster electric rc cars. Got it?
In essence electric motors with fewer turns DRAW more power and so PRODUCE more "horse" power.

The tradeoff being lower turn motors enjoy less run time. Since more energy is drained from the batteries faster.

Still, don't think all advantages lie with lower turn motors. Higher turn motors have their advantages too. Granted a higher number of turns will give you less power. But since it draws less current you'll get LONGER run times.

That and being inherently slower makes higher turn motors great for beginners just learning to drive. You know keeping on the track and so forth?

Winds

Another motor term you need to get the hang of is "winds". And winds refers to the number of strands (be it one, two, three, four etc.) in the wire wound around the armature.

At the risk of oversimplifying it - more strands or winds will tend to give you faster take offs due to increased torque.

So to sume this up, generally the lower the number of turns the faster the straight line speed it has. While electric rc cars with more winds will have more punch off the line.

Now that wasn't that hard now was it?

Anyway we've covered two critical parts of motor lingo.

Perhaps oversimplified it a bit. But at least you’re up to speed enough to make you dangerous.
This way when you see a motor described as a "17T2" you KNOW that the wire is wrapped seventeen times around the armature. PLUS that the wire is made up of two strands.

In addition you know one more thing. With it being a 17 turn motor you would expect it to be fast. Just not insanely fast.
See how easy that is?

By no stretch is this the final word on electric rc cars’ motors. It’s a primer. Designed to help you understand two terms: turns and winds that are a critical part of the motor lingo of electric rc cars.

Now that you understand a bit about turns, wanna look at ESCs?
