All About Electric RC Cars and the Radio Systems Used to Control Them

It's true. All electric rc cars need a radio system to control them.

Yeah you need to control it somehow. Or if you’re a new to electric rc cars then at least try to.

For those with the need for speed, your typical pistol-grip radio system is how you put the pedal to metal!

Okay so your electric rc cars radio system includes what exactly?

Well, let’s see. With any radio system you have
• a transmitter,
• a receiver,
• a servo or two,
• probably several frequency crystals,
and a few other odd and ends.

Of course what you hold in your hot sweaty hands is called the transmitter or radio.

Usually it’s a pistol grip with a steering wheel on one side. (Although there are some with two levers.) It’s job is to send (transmit) steering and throttle commands to your electric rc cars.

When deciding on what to get first want to do the…
Transmitter Feel Test: Look, this is without a doubt the most important part of picking a radio. You want to pick the transmitter that feels good to you. Ideally you’re looking for it to fit your hand like a glove. Does it seem heavy? Or will you be able to easily hold it for a 5-10 minute race with no problem?
The next part of the system takes you to the car itself. To the receiver.

The receiver is mounted inside electric rc cars. It’s job is to pass along commands sent by you through the radio to the steering servo/speed controller. Obviously so you can steer and speed up or slow down.

Any extra crystals let you change radio frequency. That way you don’t run on the same one as other racers creating conflict and other problems.

Keep in mind if you get a ready-to-run package you may not have the option of choosing your own radio. But if you’re putting together something yourself you surely do.

So that the story of electric RC cars and the radio systems used to control them.
