Air Filters - Why Nitro RC Cars Need Clean Air

It's a given. Nitro cars must have clean air to run well. To keep dirt and road debris out of the engine you must have a clean air filter.

To insure best performance you obviously want to clean the filter often. Especially if you're running your nitro cars or trucks in a dust bowl. Filthy air filters do terrible things to performance. Not to mention dirt and fine dust can sneak thru and kill your nitro rc cars engine in a flash.

Okay so say you buy into the need for clean air.

Which also means you buy into the idea of having a clean air filter.

At this point you might be asking "Okay, but how do I clean it?"

Good question.

Say you’re running nitro cars at the track or in the woods. There the best way to clean it is to simply soak it in a capful of nitro and squeeze it clean! The nitro gets the oil and grim out instantly. In less than minute it’s nice and dry. Simply re-oil with filter oil and you’re good to go!

Or maybe plan ahead. Buy extras. Have the extra filters pre-oiled and stuck in a ziplock bag. You know to keep your pants clean? When one gets gunked up, simply replace it with another.

Meanwhile when back at the ranch you can use dish soap and warm water to clean ‘em. Or spray-on brake parts cleaner as it’s a solvent! Squeeze-out the filter. Re-oil and away you go.

Just so it’s not sopping with oil. In other words squeeze any excess oil out of the filter (maybe into a paper towel) before you stick it back in the carb inlet.
By the way some suggest using K&N Air Filter oil.

Others prefer Honda Pro Oils motorcycle air filter oil.

Of course there’s official rc air filter oil sold at hobby stores.
Any of those should be fine and do the job.

Look. Since you know a clean air filter lets more air through, it's a good idea to get into the habit of doing this at the end of the day.

Besides the better the engine breathes the faster any nitro cars run - so why not? Since faster nitro cars is the idea for most of us to begin with.
