Under the Hood R/C
Nitro Cars: Engine Starting

As you know to start your nitro engine you use a glow plug "igniter" connected to a battery supply.

The battery supplies the juice to make the glow plug glow. But what’s really nifty is once it’s running, you can disconnect the battery and the plug will glow on it’s own to provide the needed ignition.
Pit Tip: It’s good to know that the heat of glowplug can alter the combustion timing. Get this wrong and you’ll never get your engine tuned properly
Also don’t forget that the life of any glow plug is kinda unpredictable. An if you’re careless you can burn them up prematurely.

When in doubt use the brand of plug specified by the engine manufacturer.
Pit Tip: Here’s a little trick to tell if your glow plug is toast. Listen to the engine after you unhook the power from the plug. If he engine was running fine but then quits on you REPLACE THE PLUG. That plug's a dead Indian.

Okay but what if the engine keeps running but "sags" (you know revs down) after you remove the juice? In that case it might be you either need more nitro in the fuel or a hotter plug.
Not to get all technical on you but it may help if you remember the science behind all this. Using a hotter plug will typically advance the ignition point while a colder plug will retard it.
