Bad Things Happen to Remote Control Cars Not Equipped with Fail Safes

On a balmy day in April, Jamie was all set to enjoy the heck out of his nitro remote control cars at the local rc track.

As his NTC3 was heading around the back turn, some nimrod showed up and didn’t think to check his radio frequency before turning his radio controller on. Haplessly it shared the same frequency as Jamie’s.

Jamie watched in horror as his shiny NTC3 became a full throttle runaway.

Vrooooooom!

It careened out of control a full 23 feet before taking a header into a foot high concrete curb.

The results weren’t pretty. A grim faced Jamie found the front end was thoroughly trashed. Including bumper damage, a cracked bulkhead and a broken tie-rod.
Sure this bites. But maybe it could have all been avoided had Jamie bothered to install a fail safe.

I mean until you’ve experienced it, there is nothing quite as scary as helplessly watching one of YOUR remote control cars screaming at WOT and NOT responding to your radio.
Pit Tip: This is also why 75MHz radio systems might be a good idea. They offer 30 channels versus only 6 with most 27MHz radio systems.
Besides in addition to your receiver getting "confused" by more than one signal, you can also lose control when you lose the signal for any number of other reasons…
  • your receiver battery was not charged all the way
  • the crystal falls out
  • the receiver battery some how gets disconnected or a wire comes loose
  • you run over water that somehow gets into the receiver
Anyway, whenever receiver battery power drops below 4 volts, the fail safe kicks in, closes the throttle and applies the brakes - as you breathe a sigh of relief.

Sure a fail safe will run you $25-$40.

And no, that’s not exactly cheap.

But…when consider the value of your remote control cars investment it protects I suspect you’ll find it well worth it. As it more than pays for itself after just one or two close calls.

Of course there are some who really won’t appreciate a fail safe until one of their remote control cars eats a the wall. What can I say? With a fail safe you are protected from low battery charge or other transmitter failure, not just frequency interference. So I feel they are a must for anyone running remote control cars and just can't say that enough!

Fail safes - don’t run any remote control cars without one!
