RCCars Speed: What's Gears Got to Do With It?

The secret to rccars speed or acceleration is simple. It's all about gearing. If you want blinding speed or blistering off line torque, the number that counts is your gear ratio.

You'll often see gear ratio described as 3.2 to 1. Or represented as 3.2 : 1 - with a colon between the two numbers.

To bottom line it for you here's what you need to know:
The higher your gear ratio, in other words the bigger the first number, the better the off line punch rccars have.

On the other hand the lower the gear ratio the more top end speed you'll get.
Said another way, if you want wild wheelie pulling power you have to settle for lower top speeds.

RCcars with blinding straight away speed will take longer to get there.

Got it? Okay let's make sure you do.

Which would give you faster off the line acceleration - a gear ratio of 3:1 or 5:1?

The right answer is 5:1. Again the bigger the first number the better the acceleration. Since the wheels turn at a slower rate but with more power. While the 3:1 give rccars more TOP END speed.

Of course the way to get the best of both worlds would be with a two speed transmission. That way you can get off the line quick and still have something left for rip roaring top end.
